| KATRINA RELIEF: ADOPT A FAMILY |
|---|
|
The Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, has asked the Districts of Synod to adopt various churches in the Hurricane-devastated areas. The Southeastern District (SED) has agreed to adopt St. James Lutheran Church in Gonzales, LA and Atonement Lutheran Church in Metairie, LA. Deaconess Liz DeMik (mother of Rev. Peter DeMik) has been asked to coordinate the SED Relief Program. She has asked congregations to adopt persons or families to offer aid. I brought this to the council, and now have contacted Deaconess DeMik and have offered Advent to adopt a family from Metaire. Peggy Antonucci is a divorced mother of a girl, Peyton, aged 10 years old, and a son, Gage, 7 years old. She also is responsible, at this time, for her mother, Marguirite Munoz, 67 years old, who has just finished chemo treatments for pancreatic cancer. Initially, Peggy lost her job working for a doctor in New Orleans. When I spoke with her, she was thankful to God that she found a new job, actually a better job, as a medical assistant for a group of doctors in Metairie so she does not need to travel into New Orleans. Both Peyton and Gage attend Atonement Lutheran School. The school was not damaged, so classes are in session. Peggy and the family evacuated for two weeks; food in the freezer and ‘fridge spoiled due to lack of electricity. Her home was not damaged except for missing roof tiles. However, Marguirite’s home was flooded so dry wall has been striped and furniture discarded which is one reason, besides her recuperating from the chemo, that she is staying with Peggy. When her home is repaired, and she is stronger, she wishes to return to her own house. I was very impressed with Peggy’s faith in Jesus Christ; her dedication to the Lord is very strong. Her comment was “Atonement is my family. I love my church and what it stands for. It has given me strength in my life.” At this time, the needs of the family are for our prayers, our love, and our compassion. As time progresses, I shall keep the congregation informed of further needs. I have asked Martha Cooper to be on a committee with me for this project. If anyone wishes to be included, please volunteer. On Atonement Lutheran Church and School property, Lutheran Disaster Response has set up tents to house the volunteers. Now we need to fill those tents with willing and able bodies to help these people make repairs to their homes. Please go to the website www.trcbr.org to find out how you can volunteer as a team or as an individual. |
